“When you allow students to envision their own learning and create a style that really works for them, what you’re doing is creating lifelong learners.”
Shana Norton joined the staff of North Oconee High School in 2015 as a Study Skills, Social Skills, and Math Co-teacher. She currently teaches one session of Study Skills and two sessions of Algebra 2 (as a co-teacher). She began her teaching career at Snellville Middle School, where she taught 6th-8th grade Visual Arts. While there, she started the Adaptive Art Program for the children in the self contained classrooms. Seeing the children light up when they were able to express themselves in ways that were not used to was remarkable to see.
In 2003, Dr. Norton moved to Jefferson City Schools, where she taught K-12th grade ESOL and started the Visual Arts Program at Jefferson Middle School. She was honored to be named the 2007 "Teacher of the Year" while there. She served as the Department Head from 2006-2015 and also served on two SACS committees.
She currently is in her fifth year at North Oconee and thoroughly enjoys working with students in a variety of settings, including the great outdoors. She co-sponsors the Outdoor Club, where students are provided the opportunity to hike, climb, and raft with their peers.
