Matt Cates grew up in Toccoa, Georgia, and graduated from Stephens County High School. After high school, he attended Valdosta State University for two years before transferring to the University of Georgia. He coached football at Prince Avenue Christian School for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Matt graduated from UGA in May 2016 with a teaching degree in Health and Physical Education.
